CHESSMEN
"In chessmen are found reflections of history, of politics, and of religion; and there are beauties of design in chessmen that challenge anything in objects made for purely ornamental purposes. The world has been searched for materials From which to make them: agate, amber, amethyst..."
The game of chess and the 'men' vvith which it is played are of ancient origin in both the Western European and Mohammedan cultures. The names of several of the pieces have been traced to ancient Sanskrit. 'Kings' have been modelled to represent Charlemagne and Napoleon (a chess afficionado). This lovely pictorial book which has been unavailable for some years is now reissued with original plates illustrating many of the fascinating varieties of chessmen that have been created and coilected for centuries.
